The life of young Rob J. Cole changes the day he becomes an orphan and discovers he possesses an unusual gift in his hands: he can predict death. Adopted as an apprentice by a barber-surgeon, Rob travels across England discovering life, discipline, and a curiosity for learning. At nineteen, a Jewish doctor tells him about distant Persia, where there is a medical school led by the best physician of the time: Avicenna.
Rob sets off on an adventure, willing to cross half the world to become a doctor. While traveling in a caravan across the desert, he meets Mary, a Scottish girl who will remind him of his origins and shape his future plans.
Nothing will be easy for Rob in Isfahan, neither pretending to be Jewish to be allowed to study nor his relationship with the Shah, who becomes infatuated with his friendship. He soon becomes a star pupil of Avicenna, but a plague, war, and a despotic king will test Rob's life. Only friendship, his vocation, and love will drive him to survive.
